Find out the answers to your most frequently asked questions.
Q: What types of equipment are eligible for IHIP rebates?
A: Eligible equipment must replace similar existing equipment in an Indiana owner-occupied residence and must meet ENERGY STAR eligibility criteria as of the date of purchase. Gas furnaces must have an annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) rating of 92 percent or greater. Visit energystar.gov for details.
Q: How long do I have to apply for the rebate?
A: Applications must be postmarked within 30 days from the date of equipment purchase. You must attach a copy of the paid invoice or sales receipt to the rebate application form that indicates the nstaller received full payment.
Q: How long will this rebate program last?
A: Until funds have been exhausted.
Q: My utility offers rebates for qualifying energy-efficient equipment. Can I apply for both the utility incentive and the IHIP incentive?
A: Yes, IHIP is designed to complement existing utility incentives where they exist. Ask your electric and/or gas utility for details.
Q: I’m a resident of Indiana. Am I eligible for these rebates when I replace a furnace or air conditioner in a rental property?
A: No. Properties for commercial use, including residential rental properties, are not eligible.
Q: I have the skills and experience to install the qualifying equipment in my residence. Do I have to pay an Indiana contractor to install the equipment in order to receive the rebate?
A: No. Provided that you have all of the certifications and licensing necessary for your local jurisdiction, and you adhere to all applicable ordinances for the proper permitting and inspection, you may install your own equipment and receive the rebate.
Of course, when handling refrigerants, you must also be duly certified in refrigerant transition and recovery as required by federal law (40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F) and you must adhere to all applicable procedures. In addition to these jurisdictional issues, it is recommended that you read and understand the Instruction to Furnace Installers on the IHIP rebate form; there you will find a discussion of the requirements for handling chimneys after installing a high-efficiency furnace in the residence.
